Biography

Our story

(en Français)

It all began when Frederic was organising improvisation concerts in Nice. Since the end of Philharmonie, he had in mind to make an ergetic band, like a rock trio (by the way that’s how Philharmonie ended). At one of these concerts he met the bass player Stephane Bertrand and decided to found Yang with Volodia Brice on Drums and Julien Vecchié, one of his students, on guitar.

Changement of plans (and people!)

After releasing our first album, A Complex Nature on Cuneiform Records, and as we were about to play our first concert in Nice, Stephane and Julien decided to withdraw.
Exactly at the same time, as if by a stroke of synchronicity, the bassist Nico Gomez and the guitarist Laurent James, Frederic’s former students whom he hadn’t seen in a long time, got in touch with him.

The current flows immediately between them and the new and definitive version of the band was born.

With this formation Yang performed many concerts and recorded four other albums: two self-produced, Machines in 2010, The Failure of Words in 2017, both instrumental and two with Cuneiform Records, Designed for Disaster in 2022, joined by the jazz and experimental singer Ayşe Cansu Tanrıkulu on vocals, and Rejoice! in 2024, with Carla Kihlstedt violinist and singer with Spleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Questions you might ask

What kind of music plays Yang?

Math Rock – Prog Rock – Art Rock, these words are usually used to describe our music but we prefer Chamber Rock, mostly instrumental, even if on our two last albums, Designed for Disaster and Rejoice!, we added vocals on several songs.

How does it sound like?

Often compared to King Crimson, our work is of course more complex than pure rock, but it always sounds natural. We never search for complexity. These structures, rhythms, melodies are inspired by Rock and Progressive Rock, but also Center Asia/Eastern Europe sounds as well as contemporary new music.

Where can we see you play?

We use to play mostly in festivals, Prog festivals like ProgDay in the U.S. or other kind of festivals in Europe. We also play in rock venues but only in Europe. We are currently working on booking for 2026 and 2027. Check out our News page from time to time.

Can we buy your music or t-shirts?

On our Store page one can find all our available items.
Our Bandcamp page is also worth visiting, and of course our label, Cuneiform Records and Wayside Music, the official store.
